Some friends recently asked me to find a guitar for their offspring. They'd listened to me drone on over the years about how a cheap guitar package, the under £100 "kit", has been responsible for more people being put off for life than any other single influence. They set a reasonable budget and entrusted me to find something "either new or used" that would suit a beginner.
The shop assistant was quite pleasant when I said I just wanted to try a few in the price range I had the budget for. He pointed me in the right direction and I got comfy trying a few. After five minutes he wandered over and asked if I wanted to plug them in. I said "not really", and continued strumming first position chords, simply trying to get a feel for how it would suit a beginner. Rather than bugger off and leave me in peace, he started asking questions about style, amps, effects and so on. I told him I just wanted something for a beginner.
His first mistake was in assuming I meant me. His second mistake was in becoming patronising and explaining that I'd be better off with one of their £70 packages seeing as I was "just learning".
I remembered the teachings of Viktor Frankl, paused, and chose my response. I got up and walked out, leaving him to put the guitars away.
The title comes from a favourite meme of mine. "Underestimate me... that'll be fun."
So this track is me getting my own back on the shop assistant without him knowing it.
